The Challenge
The targeted downtown corridor suffered from high crime rates, poor lighting, overgrown and unmanaged landscaping, and minimal natural surveillance. These environmental factors deterred foot traffic, harmed local commerce, and created an unsafe experience for pedestrians and transit riders.
Solution
A multi-faceted CPTED-based design approach was applied to the public right-of-way, centering on natural surveillance, territorial reinforcement, and environmental maintenance.
Enhanced Lighting & Visibility
Upgraded lighting infrastructure eliminated dark corners and blind spots, increasing nighttime visibility and the psychological perception of safety.
Landscaping & Sightlines
Overgrown vegetation and visual clutter were cleared or redesigned to open sightlines from adjacent storefronts and streets, enhancing natural surveillance.
Corridor Restructuring
Physical streetscape updates slowed vehicular traffic, better delineated pedestrian walkways, and created a more inviting environment for foot traffic and local businesses.
Results
Reduction in crime incidents within the corridor following the redesign.
The physical transformation successfully restored foot traffic, reduced anti-social behavior, and renewed local merchant confidence — proving the direct correlation between targeted environmental design and community safety.
